Happy Christmas in July!

I have had such a wonderful month creating in my new studio (thanks to all of you!) that I wanted to do something special. So I'm having a special Christmas in July sale! I'm giving away free...(yes...you read that right) Giclee prints for the next 5 days!

I finished the commissioned custom painting for the contest winner, Joyce from Baja California, Mexico. I'm still waiting to hear from her to see if she likes it. She wanted a version of the "Sun Goddess", so I created the "Sun Diva". What do you think?

Happy Valentine's Day!

wycart.jpg Wednesday, 14 February 07 - 08:10 PM (GMT -05:00)
By Wyanne Thompson in New Work
I hope everyone is having a great one!  My 5 year old's handmade Valentine's were a big hit in her class.  She has been beaming with glee all day.

In other news, the Wine Festival my husband founded was named 1 of the top 11 Wine Festivals by Grape magazine, put out by Publix.  His festival, Wine South is #11, but he made the list and I couldn't be prouder.

I received some gorgeous purple Tulips for Valentines from my dear hubbie.  He knows they are my favorite flower.  Makes me wish for Spring even more.

And as promised...here's the latest pic of the new mixed media painting that I'm working on.  You can see that the seed beads are looking better.  And, I've added a door.

Yes, it opens and closes, and was made entirely by me.  Not an easy task...but it's going to lead to somewhere special.  Can't wait for it to be finished, so you can see it.

Love to Everyone....Happy Valentine's Day!  Wyanne

A glimpse of the New Work

wycart.jpg Monday, 12 February 07 - 06:25 PM (GMT -05:00)
By Wyanne Thompson in New Work
I wanted to share my new work in progress.  I've been taking Svaroopa yoga, and it has an extensive meditation at the beginning and end of the sessions.  I found that at the end of the session, I meditate about my artwork.  I'm very relaxed and it allows me to really explore what direction I want to go with the work.  It's almost as if I can travel through the painting.  It reminds me of the Robin Williams movie, What Dreams May Come"

It's causing me to stretch my creativity in a lot of ways.  It's helping me to rediscover my different loves in art and combine them into a single creation.  I'm very excited about it.

So, yesterday I started working on the new claybord panels from Jerry's Artarama.  This is the background watercolor on the board.  I'm very happy with the way it's coming out.

One of the best things about these boards is the fact that they are 2" deep.  The claybord is cradled with 2" strips of wood.  It's a solid well constructed piece.

After completing the background, I'm adding beads.  I know it looks like a gloppy mess right now.  These are tiny seed beads, that I'm hoping will add another dimension and interest to the work.  Even though it looks rather strange, and I'm trying not to panic that I might have made a mistake with the beads....I'm going with it.  I think it's going to turn out really good in the end.

More tomorrow.

Craft Porcelain

wycart.jpg Wednesday, 07 February 07 - 04:35 PM (GMT -05:00)
By Wyanne Thompson in New Work

Well, today I tried a new product in my studio.  It's called Craft Porcelain.  I bought it some time ago to try out and finally got around to it.  As many of you know, for a while I made real porcelain art dolls.  The Craft Porcelain is an air dry clay, so it doesn't require a kiln.  I have some really cool 50's high ball glasses that I wanted to use as the base for some new art doll figures.  The head was to be shaped from the Craft Porcelain.  Well, it turned out to be a little frustrating.  I tend to like clays that I can add water to smooth areas.  You can't add water to the Craft Porcelain, it becomes sticky.  The package says that you can steam it with heat to soften it.  I think the clay would be good for flowers, etc.  but not so much for doll heads.  I had a hard time smoothing it in areas that were joined together.  I even tried smoothing with a clay shaper and it still was difficult.  The whole texture of the clay reminded me of the stuff you used in kindergarten that was made with Elmer's glue (it even had that smell to it).  The thin areas of the clay are drying translucent.  I made two heads and gave up.  I think I'm going to have to look into a different material for the heads.  I'll keep you posted.

Don't forget Oprah has "The Secret" on tomorrow!  It will change your life....Watch it!

So excited...new art stuff coming in the mail!

wycart.jpg Tuesday, 06 February 07 - 01:55 PM (GMT -05:00)
By Wyanne Thompson in New Work
So, as I told you yesterday, I have been working on developing a new type/technique/artwork/whatever.  I've had to spend a lot of time thinking out the execution of this work, since it's a little different that anything I've done in the past.  I couldn't use traditional stretched canvas for the work because it wasn't strong enough.  So...it was looking like the new work was going to have to be on wood.  For me... this was not looking good.  Trips to Home Depot are usually not a pleasant experience for me.  And the thought of having to decide what wood, find someone to cut it for me....and then sand and prepare it...was making the whole adventure look bleak.  So when things look bleak...where do you turn....good old Google!  I found a product that had intrigued me in the past, and it had evolved into just what I needed.  The product is called Ampersand Claybord.

Some of you might know if for "Scratch Art".  In the past few years they have added several types of texture to it, like gesso, and hardwood.  The claybord itself has always been great for watercolors.  But, now to make it better, they have cradled it with 2" sides.

So, there is no framing necessary.  This is really good for my new work!  Can't tell you the exact reason why....cause I'd ruin the surprise!  But, it will provide a strong support me with no warping.  Yeah!!!!  No Home Depot trips....no begging my DH to saw and sand wood for me!  Now....if it will just get here, so I can start working!  Jerry's Artarama ...please send my order Fast!

Back to the studio for me....
